Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer” inspires new 5 Seconds of Summer song, “Easier”

Interscope RecordsNine Inch Nails is probably not the first band you’d think of as an influence on 5 Seconds of Summer, but the Australian group apparently looked to Trent Reznor‘s band for inspiration on their new single, “Easier.”

Speaking to Rolling Stone, 5SOS says that “Easier” is “derivative of the driving drum groove” from the NIN classic “Closer.” They add that they were also inspired by bands including Depeche Mode and Tears for Fears.

While “Easier” may take some sonic pointers from “Closer,” it’s certainly not as explicit lyrically as the 1994 hit.

The latest Nine Inch Nails album is 2018’s Bad Witch. You can also hear Reznor’s soundtrack work on HBO’s upcoming Watchmen series, premiering this fall.
