ABC/Randy HolmesMastodon‘s Troy Sanders lends his signature growling vocals to “Fought the Line,” a new song from instrumental band Dub Trio.
The track is available now for digital download and streaming; there’s also a black-and-white video, featuring many creepy shots of a forest, posted on YouTube.
“‘Fought the Line’ references struggle,” Sanders tells Consequence of Sound. “It comes from a poem that I wrote inspired by a conversation I had with cancer itself. I stared at a face of beautiful, soft skin and assured this face, ‘I will take care of you.'”
Sanders’ wife Jeza was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. Mastodon’s latest album, 2017’s Emperor of Sand, is also about cancer.
“Fought the Line” appears on Dub Trio’s upcoming album The Shape of Dub to Come, due out April 26.
Meanwhile, Mastodon will hit the road with Coheed and Cambria on the Unheavenly Skye tour starting in May. During the tour, Mastodon will be playing their 2009 album Crack the Skye in full to celebrate its 10th anniversary.
