Rock and Goal! Robert Plant performs at favorite soccer team’s end-of-season awards ceremony

Credit: Mads PerchRobert Plant showed a whole lotta love for his favorite soccer club, the Wolverhampton Wanderers, when he gave a surprise performance at the team’s end-of-season awards dinner Tuesday night in Telford, U.K. The Shropshire Star reports that the Led Zeppelin legend helped kick off the festivities by singing his old band’s classic, “Whole Lotta Love.”

Plant then introduced the members of the team, commonly known as the Wolves, as the evening’s house band played the club’s adopted anthem, the 1969 reggae instrumental “The Liquidator.” The Wolves had much to celebrate this season, as they easily won the English Football League Championship and will be promoted to the more prestigious Premiere League for the 2018-2019 season.

Plant, who’s been a lifelong fan of Wolverhampton, was interviewed at the ceremony by U.K. sports presenter Jacqui Oatley. Acknowledging the team’s infrequent success, Robert said, “It’s been a bloody murderous journey. This is paradise.”

Plant has a North American summer tour with his current band The Sensational Space Shifters lined up that runs from a June 8 concert in Atlanta through a June 29 performance in Vancouver, Canada. He and the group also will play have three U.S. festivals in September.
